Density is one of the most useful PTFE tape specifications—and one of the easiest to overlook. It describes how much PTFE material is packed into a given volume, helping buyers compare tape that may look similar on the roll but behave differently during application.
What Does PTFE Tape Density Mean?
PTFE tape density is normally expressed in grams per cubic centimetre (g/cm³). A higher figure generally indicates that more PTFE material is present within the same volume of tape. This can produce a firmer, less translucent tape that resists shredding and fills thread gaps more consistently.
Density should not be considered alone. Width, thickness, length, tensile consistency and the quality of the PTFE resin also affect how a roll performs.
How Density Changes Application
Lower to Medium Density
Flexible and economical for routine plumbing connections where pressure and thread condition are moderate.
Higher Density
Provides more material per wrap and is generally preferred for demanding fittings, larger tolerances and industrial service.
